The US and China finally reach a framework agreement regarding TikTok's business continuity

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who met with Chinese officials in Madrid for two days, announced that the United States and China had agreed on a 'framework' for TikTok. Due to national security concerns, the U.S. had passed legislation requiring TikTok to either sell its business to a U.S. company or cease providing services.

On September 15th local time, President Donald Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social, 'The major trade talks between the United States and China in Europe went very well and are almost over. We also reached an agreement on a CERTAIN company that our young people desperately wanted saved. They will be very happy. I will be meeting with President Xi Jinping on Friday. Relations between our two countries remain very strong!'

The 'certain company' in question is ByteDance, the operator of TikTok. In the United States, concerns have arisen over the popularity of TikTok, operated by the Chinese company ByteDance, and legislation has been passed requiring the company to either sell its US operations to a US-owned company or cease providing services in the US. However, negotiations have been difficult, as ByteDance needs approval from the Chinese government to sell its operations, and President Trump has signed three executive orders postponing the implementation of the legislation. The third extension deadline, September 17, 2025, was fast approaching.

'These are two private operators, and they have reached an agreement on commercial terms,' Bessent told reporters after meeting with Chinese officials.

Given President Trump's positive comments, it appears that TikTok will be able to continue providing its services in the United States, but it is unclear whether operations will be transferred to a joint venture between ByteDance and an American company, or whether ByteDance has found a way to continue operations.
