TikTok's 'ban' problem could end soon with a new app and a sale | The Verge
TikTok is a short video social networking site operated by the Chinese company ByteDance, which has been required to suspend its service in the United States or sell it to a non-Chinese company for security reasons. The law that provides the basis for this is commonly known as the 'TikTok Ban Act,' and the deadline for implementing measures was January 19, 2025, but President Trump has issued executive orders to extend the deadline every time it comes around.
At the same time, President Trump was urging TikTok to sell its US operations and keep the service afloat.

According to reports from news sites such as The Information, TikTok's US operations are being acquired by a non-Chinese investment group including Oracle, while ByteDance is expected to remain involved in TikTok's US operations as a minority shareholder.
However, with this change in business entity, 'the portal cannot remain as it is,' and a 'new TikTok app for the US' is expected to be launched on September 5, 2025.
The TikTok app will not immediately become unavailable in the United States, but it will be shut down in March 2026.
It is unclear what the new TikTok app will be like. News site PhoneArena said, 'There may be more content that aligns with the Trump administration's politics, but for average users, I don't think there will be any changes beyond having to download a new app.'
On the other hand, PhoneArena points out that globally popular platforms have been criticized for not being popular in China and pushing out alternatives, and says it is ironic that this measure will make the US the only app that is different from the global TikTok.
