White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said, 'As we have said many times, President Trump does not want to shut down TikTok. This extension will be for 90 days, and the Administration will work during this time to secure the sale and ensure that Americans can continue to use TikTok, knowing their data is secure.'
TikTok was deemed an ' adversarially controlled application' under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act , commonly known as the TikTok Ban Act, enacted under the Joe Biden administration, because its parent company is Chinese-owned. The company was required to either sell its business or cease providing its services in the United States by a deadline of January 19, 2025.
TikTok chose to suspend its service rather than sell it, and was in fact suspended at one point. However, Trump, who took office the day after the suspension deadline, signed an executive order granting a 75-day grace period for enforcement of the law and indicated his intention to continue efforts to keep TikTok in business, allowing TikTok to resume its service.
75 days later, President Trump signed an executive order extending the extension for another 75 days, strongly indicating his intention to keep the service in the U.S. by asking TikTok to sell. According to reports, TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, was almost ready to set up a new company in the U.S., but negotiations were halted when the Chinese government said it would not approve the deal following the announcement of reciprocal tariffs by the U.S.
