'Blocky Planet' recreates the world of 'Minecraft' on a round planet like Earth

Minecraft , which has sold over 350 million copies and is listed in the Guinness World Records as the world's best-selling game, is a game in which players explore a world made up of voxels (blocks) while crafting houses and tools. Blocky Planet is an attempt to recreate the world of Minecraft on a spherical planet, and is available for free.

Blocky Planet runs on the Unity engine.

First, choose a star from four types: 'Small' for small size, 'Large' for large size, 'Flat' for flat landforms, and 'Amplified' for rugged landforms. This time, I selected 'Large.'

The game has started. If you watch the movie below, you can get a good idea of what Blocky Planet is like.

Movement operations are 'W' to move forward, 'S' to move backward, 'A' to move left, 'D' to move right, and 'Space' to jump. You can change the viewpoint using the mouse.

To cut a block, left-click the mouse. I tried cutting a tree growing near the starting point and climbing to a higher place.

In the world of the original Minecraft, the horizon is straight, but in Blocky Planet, the horizon seen from the treetops was slightly curved.

If you press 'Space' twice quickly, you can fly, so try looking around the world from higher up.

If you fly high enough, you can clearly see that the world is on a sphere.

Of course, there's also the sun, so half of the round star is day and half is night. As you can see in the video below, by flying high in the sky and orbiting the star like a satellite, you can instantly go from a daytime area to a nighttime area.

Gravity seems to be directed towards the center of the star, so if you fly up into the sky, you fall straight to the ground. However, if you get too excited and fly too high, you may exceed cosmic velocity and end up in a satellite orbit like an artificial satellite, and you will not be able to return home, so you need to be careful.

Based on Minecraft, you can place various blocks by right-clicking the mouse. Blocks are displayed at the bottom of the screen and can be selected by using the mouse wheel.

However, Blocky Planet only allows you to place voxels, and there is no crafting element. Also, there is no mechanism for water to flow even when you place water blocks.

Additionally, 'Q' fires a beam that can place a large number of voxels at once.

Conversely, pressing 'E' will release a beam that can destroy a large number of voxels at once.

So, I was really curious about what was going on deep underground, so I fired a destructive beam at my feet.

The following movie shows how the beam drills a hole in the ground and explores the center of the star.

The beam destroys blocks in the ground, digging holes deeper and deeper.

I let gravity take over and fell through the hole created by the destruction beam, and eventually I saw something dazzling.

The planet was hollow, with a core in the center, which acted as a gravitational force, pulling the body towards the core.

At the time of writing, Blocky Planet is merely a technical demo, meaning unlike the original Minecraft, you can only place and destroy blocks. When asked if they plan to release a full version, the developers responded, 'Probably not. At least, it's not complete enough to be able to comfortably charge for it. Unfortunately, working full-time doesn't allow for much time for side projects like this, and the amount of work required to go from a technical demo to a finished product can be enormous. That said, there's a good chance we'll release updates from time to time.'
