Review of the official Nintendo USB camera 'Nintendo Switch 2 Camera' that enables video calls in Nintendo Switch 2 game chat, and can be used on Windows PCs with a 110-degree diagonal angle

Nintendo's next-generation console, the

Nintendo Switch 2 , adds a new ' Game Chat ' feature from the previous generation, allowing up to 12 people to play together and have voice calls. Video chat is also possible by connecting a separately sold USB camera, and Nintendo's official USB camera, the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera , was also released at the same time as the console. I was able to get this Nintendo Switch 2 Camera when I purchased the Nintendo Switch 2, so I decided to check out what kind of camera it actually is.

The Nintendo Switch 2 camera package looks like this.

The contents include the Nintendo Switch 2 camera body and a USB-C charging cable.

The Nintendo Switch 2 camera has a simple structure, with the camera mounted on a base and support.

You can't pan the camera left and right or adjust its height, but you can only tilt it up and down, up to about 25 degrees up and 10 degrees down. The movement is smooth, and it stays firmly in place at any angle you move your head.

There is a USB-C port at the bottom of the back of the camera.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Camera connects to the USB-C port on the top of the console. Because it connects to the top port, it can be used in handheld mode, TV mode, and desktop mode.

The Nintendo Switch 2 main unit and the Nintendo Switch 2 camera are lined up. The height of the camera is just a little higher than the Nintendo Switch 2 inserted in the dock, so it does not block the camera's view even when placed behind the Nintendo Switch 2 main unit.

The Nintendo Switch 2 camera has a built-in physical shutter. Below, the physical shutter is closed, with the center of the lens covered by a white curtain.

The physical shutter is released by turning a ring on the edge of the camera body.

Rotating the ring clockwise revealed the camera lens.

To check if you can actually record with the camera connected to the Nintendo Switch 2, go to 'Controllers and Peripherals' in the Nintendo Switch 2 settings and select 'USB Camera Operation Check.'

The video captured by the Nintendo Switch 2 camera was then displayed. The Nintendo Switch 2 camera can capture a diagonal range of 110 degrees, and it is said to be able to capture images brightly even in a dark room. Although it is a fairly wide angle, it is adjusted so that there is not much distortion at the edges.

The 'Nintendo Switch

2 Secrets Exhibition,' where you can learn about the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware while playing, also includes an area for the Nintendo Switch 2 camera, where you can play games that recognize facial expressions using the Nintendo Switch 2 camera.

In 'Settings,' your face will be automatically recognized when it is captured by the Nintendo Switch 2 camera and placed in a specified position.

You can see how the Nintendo Switch 2 camera is used to take on the face-imitation challenge at the 'Nintendo Switch 2 Secret Exhibition' in the following movie.

Check out the facial expression recognition function of the Nintendo Switch 2 camera at the 'Nintendo Switch 2 Secret Exhibition' - YouTube

The features that were recognized were the shape of the eyebrows, opening and closing of the eyelids, gaze, mouth shape, and face direction. Facial expressions were scored on a scale of 5 recognized features x 20 points = 100 points, but the recognition accuracy was high, and even the slightest movement led to changes in the face, so it seemed quite difficult to get even 90 points.

Next, I connected the Nintendo Switch 2 camera to a Windows PC.

There were no particular issues and it was recognized by Windows. The device name was 'Nintendo Switch Camera.'

I measured the resolution of the Nintendo Switch 2 camera using the '

Webcam Test ' website, which allows you to check the resolution of your webcam in your browser. According to the test, the default camera resolution in the browser is 640 x 480 pixels, and the maximum resolution supported by the camera is 1920 x 1080 pixels. It seems the Nintendo Switch 2 camera can also be used as a webcam for a laptop.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is priced at 5,980 yen including tax. At the time of writing, it was available for order on Amazon.co.jp for 5,479 yen including tax.
