President Trump has published letters addressed to various countries on Truth Social. The letter addressed to Japan is addressed to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Although the letter prefaces the statement that 'the United States agrees to continue its cooperative relationship with Japan,' it also states that the long-term and deep-rooted trade deficit with Japan must be overcome, and makes clear its intention to impose a 25% tariff on all Japanese products sent to the United States from August 1, 2025.

The 25% additional tariff is in addition to the tariffs for each sector. If Japan raises its tariffs for any reason, the US has stated that it will add the amount of the tariff increase made by Japan to the 25% additional tariff.
'If China wishes to open previously closed trade markets to the United States and remove tariffs, non-tariff policies and trade barriers, we will consider revising the letter,' the statement said.
