On April 2, 2025, President Trump announced 'reciprocal tariffs' that would impose a flat 10% basic tariff on all imports and additional tariffs on a country/region basis.

The Trump administration then announced that it would suspend country-specific tariff increases for 90 days for countries that did not retaliate against the reciprocal tariffs. China has raised its retaliatory tariffs against the United States, so the United States has raised its tariffs against China to 145%.

However, since many companies in the technology industry manufacture their products overseas, including in China, there has been much speculation about what impact the reciprocal tariffs will have. After announcing the reciprocal tariffs, President Trump emphasized that 'iPhones can be produced in the United States, ' but some experts said that 'it is impossible to produce iPhones in the United States.'

Meanwhile, on the evening of April 11, 2025 local time, the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) published a list of product categories that will be excluded from reciprocal tariffs.

The list includes electronic devices such as smartphones, laptops, hard drives, and semiconductors. All of these will be exempt from both the 125% tariffs on Chinese products and the global baseline tariffs. However, TechCrunch speculates that the 20% tariffs on China will 'continue to apply as usual.'

For example, the 256GB iPhone 16 Pro costs about $580 for parts, assembly and testing. If a 20% tariff on Chinese goods is applied to this, the cost is $696. But if a 145% tariff is applied to electronics, the cost is $1,421.

Regarding the exemption of electronics from the reciprocal tariffs, Daniel Ives, global head of technology research at financial services company Wedbush Securities, described it as a 'dream scenario for technology investors.'

Tech giants like Apple and NVIDIA will no doubt be pleased with this news, as will American consumers who will be able to avoid a huge price hike for the next iPhone. But the industry could be subject to more targeted tariffs and other restrictions, as The New York Times reports that 'The Trump Administration is Preparing a National Security Investigation into Semiconductors.'
