Mr.Deepfakes, the Internet's largest deepfake porn site, is permanently shut down

The problem of deepfake pornography, which uses the faces of others without permission, has become so serious worldwide that with the advent of high-precision image synthesis AI, there are businesses that undertake the creation of deepfakes targeting not only celebrities but also ordinary people. 'Mr.Deepfakes,' a particularly notorious site in the deepfake pornography industry with millions of monthly hits, announced in May 2025 that it would be permanently closed and would not reopen.

Mr.Deepfakes has been attracting attention as a site at the center of deepfake pornography spreading around the world. According to a survey on deepfake pornography conducted jointly by STRG_F , a project jointly funded by German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, and Bellingcat, a Dutch investigative journalism organization, Mr.Deepfakes uploaded 58,123 videos between February 2018 and December 2024, and had been viewed a total of more than 2 billion times.

Mr.Deepfakes was a place where users could upload deepfake porn videos, where viewers could purchase videos, and where a community could send requests to create deepfake porn. The forum also developed new techniques for creating deepfake porn and shared links to useful apps and tools, making it an important resource for people creating deepfake porn.
Starting May 4, 2025, when you access Mr. Deepfakes' site, instead of a list of deepfake porn videos, you will see a message like the one in the image below. The message reads, 'A critical service provider has permanently suspended service. Due to data loss, we are unable to continue operations. We have no plans to resume operations. Any websites claiming to resume this (Mr. Deepfakes) are lies. This domain will expire and we are not responsible for future use. This message will be removed in approximately one week.'

At the time of writing, it is unclear which provider suspended Mr.Deepfakes or why the data was lost.
Hany Farid, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley and a world authority on digitally altered images, told 404media, 'The permanent closure of Mr.Deepfakes is an important victory for victims of deepfake pornography, but it has been too long a journey with too few victories. The technology, finance and advertising services that profit from and support sites like Mr.Deepfakes must take greater responsibility for their role in the creation and distribution of deepfake pornography. This removal is a good start, but there are many more similar cases. We cannot stop here.'
