Microsoft Edge finally starts disabling ad blocker 'uBlock Origin'

Following Google Chrome's move to phase out Manifest V2 and extensions based on this specification, it has now been discovered that Microsoft Edge is also starting to disable uBlock Origin and turn off the feature.

Google is gradually migrating to Manifest V3, and it has been reported that in August 2024, users of Chrome using Manifest V2 extensions such as uBlock Origin will receive a warning indicating that support for the extensions has ended.

According to a report by IT news site Neowin on February 26, 2025, the latest version of Edge's test version 'Canary' also disabled the Manifest V2 extension, displaying the message 'Support for this extension has ended. We recommend that you remove it.'

Although Edge has turned off the old extensions without asking you, they're not completely gone yet: you can re-enable them by toggling them on in the Extensions management screen and agreeing to the permission requests again.
Unlike Google, which has a clear roadmap for the abolition of Manifest V2, Microsoft's documentation states that the transition to Manifest V3 is 'undecided,' so it is not yet clear what this change in the test version of Edge means. At the time of writing, this change has only been confirmed in the Canary version, and uBlock Origin continues to work without any problems in the developer 'Dev' version, the verification 'Beta' version, and the stable release version.
For these reasons, some users have speculated that this change is an 'unexpected change' that occurred upstream in Chromium.

Neowin added, 'In any case, it's only a matter of time before Microsoft deprecates Manifest V2-based extensions. While we wait for Microsoft to clarify the date, let's get prepared.'
Users who use extensions that rely on Manifest V2 have two options: either migrate to an extension that complies with Manifest V3, or switch to another browser that supports Manifest V2. For example, the uBlock Origin development team recommends that users migrate to ' uBlock Origin Lite ', which complies with Manifest V3.
Mozilla has also stated that it will continue to support Manifest V2-based extensions in Firefox.
