Sony Group's total sales for the third quarter of 2024 were 4.4096 trillion yen, up 18% from the same period last year, and its operating profit was 469.3 billion yen, up 1% from the same period last year.
Sony cited 'significant increases in sales in the Financial, Game & Network Services (G&NS), and Music segments' as factors behind the sharp increase in sales, while citing 'significant decreases in profits in the Financial segment, decreases in profits in the Pictures segment, and worsening profits in other segments' as factors behind the lack of growth in operating profit.
However, growth in the G&NS segment was remarkable, with sales in the segment increasing significantly from 1.4444 trillion yen in the same period last year to 1.6823 trillion yen.
In addition, Sony reported in its financial results report that PS5 shipments in the third quarter of 2024 will be approximately 9.5 million units. This is the highest number since the PS5 was released, and is close to the peak shipments of the predecessor model, the PlayStation 4 (PS4), in the third quarter of 2017.
Sony has also reported that cumulative sales of the PS5 have exceeded 75 million units. However, Sony has not disclosed the sales figures for the PlayStation 5 Pro, which was released in November 2025.
According to Sony, the number of monthly active users across all platforms has reached 129 million, up 43% from the same period in the PS4 generation. Sony also estimates that approximately 42% of PS5s shipped in the third quarter of 2024 were purchased by new users, which led to a significant increase in active users.
