PayPay, a cashless payment app used by over 70 million people in Japan, and Binance Japan, the Japanese subsidiary of Binance, one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, have announced a capital and business alliance. The two companies aim to provide Japanese users with a new, convenient financial experience. PayPay has invested 40% in Binance Japan, but the specific amount has not been disclosed.
As a first step in this partnership, PayPay and Binance have revealed that they are considering the following collaborative measures:
1: Introducing the ability to purchase cryptocurrencies with 'PayPay Money' to the Binance Japan app
2: Establishing a system that allows users to select 'PayPay Money' as the withdrawal destination when selling virtual currency

Regarding the capital and business alliance between PayPay and Binance Japan, Bloomberg reported that 'PayPay, a subsidiary of SoftBank, has invested in Binance Japan to expand its cryptocurrency business.' Furthermore, citing data from the Japan Cryptocurrency Exchange Association, the report stated that cryptocurrency trading volume in Japan's digital asset market doubled between January and July 2025, reaching 33.7 trillion yen.

Reuters reported that 'PayPay is the latest Japanese company to expand its digital asset offerings, driven by anticipated deregulation in Japan and record-high cryptocurrency prices that have piqued the interest of industry insiders.' Furthermore, citing a spokesperson for Laser Digital, a subsidiary of Nomura Holdings, Japan's largest securities firm, the report said the company is in the process of obtaining a cryptocurrency trading license for institutional investors in Japan. The Nikkei Shimbun also cited a March 2025 report by the Financial Services Agency stating that ' the Financial Services Agency plans to revise the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act to legally classify cryptocurrencies as financial products ' as one of the reasons the cryptocurrency market is attracting attention in Japan.
