YouTube points out that ad blockers may affect the accuracy of view counts regarding the decline in view counts

Since August 2025, YouTube has been experiencing a mysterious phenomenon where the number of views of videos has dropped dramatically. While it was speculated that this was due to restrictions on viewing by minors, Google's announcement has led to the theory that views from users with ad blockers may be being excluded.

According to 9to5Google, several YouTubers have confirmed that their views have dropped significantly since mid-August 2025.

YouTuber Josh Strife Hayes speculated that the sudden drop in views on YouTube could be due to YouTube not properly counting views from users with ad blockers enabled.

When Hayes compared YouTube analytics data on August 10, 2025, with that on August 14, 2025, he found that while the number of views on TV, smartphones, and tablets was roughly the same, for some reason, PC viewing had almost halved.

Tech Linked, a YouTube channel that covers technology topics, also confirmed similar figures in its analytics. Linus Tech Tips, who runs Tech Linked, pointed out that 'view counts are down, but ad revenue is not.' If ad revenue is not declining despite a decline in PC views, it makes sense that viewers using ad blockers are not being counted correctly.

The YouTube team addressed the decline in views in a post titled 'Update on YouTube View Counts and Restricted Mode' on September 15, 2025. The post stated, 'Ad blockers and other extensions can affect the accuracy of reported view counts. Channels with a higher proportion of viewers using these tools may experience greater traffic fluctuations related to updates to these tools.'

Some have suggested that the drop in views may be due to the Restricted Mode feature, which filters out inappropriate adult content. However, Google says, 'Restricted Mode accounts for only a small fraction of YouTube's daily views, we're not seeing an increase in viewers using Restricted Mode, and having this option enabled doesn't result in a decrease in views.'
