ServerlessHorrors is a blog that collects scary stories of people who suddenly received a high server charge.

Most paid cloud servers and APIs use a pay-as-you-go system where the fee varies depending on the amount of usage. As a result, if the number of service users suddenly increases or you forget to set a fee cap, you can often end up with an eye-poppingly high fee.

Andras Bacsai 's blog, ServerlessHorrors , compiles stories of people who have been charged high fees for renting a server.

If you visit ServerlessHorrors, you will find a variety of user experiences. Let's take a look at the top post at the time of writing, which was ' ~$1,189.420/month .'

The report was made by '

Curated Design ,' a website that compiles various designs, and claimed to have received a bill for $1,189 (approximately 176,000 yen) for a one-month subscription fee. The 'Original post' in the text is a link to the original post Curated Design reported on X, 'What happened' is a post explaining the situation, and 'They got refunded' is a link to a post reporting that the refund had been made.

Curated Design reports, 'There were no changes, no spikes in traffic, and usage was normal. Then, all of a sudden, my bill jumped from $49 to $1,189 per month.'

Curated Design used Webflow as its hosting platform. Webflow's terms of service stipulated that if they exceeded their bandwidth cap for two consecutive months, they would be automatically upgraded with additional add-ons based on their usage. Curated Design's traffic exceeded 2TB in one month, and 4TB in two months. This resulted in the plan being upgraded and the price increasing.

The sudden increase in traffic volume was due to the site's 1,000-pixel wide cover image, a PNG file with a large file size. As the number of site visits increased, so did the amount of data transferred. Curated Design points out that the market price for similar traffic volume with other CDN services is around $40 to $80.

Curated Design also acknowledges that it received emails warning it was approaching its data limit, but claims that the emails were vague and did not suggest the possibility of a large charge exceeding $1,000. Therefore, it did not anticipate that 2TB of traffic would incur such a high cost, and did not take any special precautions.

After contacting Webflow, Curated Design was granted a one-time refund and the automatically added add-ons were removed, for which Curated Design expressed its gratitude to Webflow.
