Introducing the digital sandbox game 'Aivilization,' in which tens of thousands of autonomously moving AI agents create their own civilization and economy
Aivilization is a large-scale social experiment project led by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to explore the evolution of AI and civilization. Participants create, edit, and train their own AI agents in a digital sandbox environment where thousands of agents are active, simulating and exploring how humans and AI will coexist, co-create, and co-evolve in the future.

Aivilization is an educational simulation game in which players create their own AI agents and observe and guide their growth and social interactions. Rather than simply controlling a character, players take on the role of designer and mentor of an AI agent that thinks and acts autonomously.
When you join the game, you first configure your agent's personality, talents, values, and goals, and then you can upload your own 'digital consciousness' to generate a digital avatar, or you can freely build an entirely new character.
The AI agent's personality can be set using the 16-type personality test (MBTI).
Once created, you can edit the internal structure (architecture) of the agent, such as the cognitive modules that control its thinking and behavior, and observe how these adjustments affect the agent's decision-making. It is also important to guide the agent to optimize its task execution and long-term behavioral patterns by providing prompts and goals, and to provide feedback on its performance to encourage self-evolution.
The world of Aivilization features a sophisticated socio-economic system, including a dynamic, decentralized market based on AMM (Automated Market Maker), autonomous economic activity driven by AI agents, a social networking feature that allows for real-time interactions, and a rich crafting system.
A distinctive feature of this system is the 'occupation' system, in which the AI mayor autonomously decides on policies and builds a career framework based on those policies. In this complex social environment, the agent acts autonomously through advanced thought processes such as planning, re-planning, and dialogue, while utilizing long-term and short-term memory based on data such as market prices and building information.
The Aivilization team summarizes the significance of Aivilization in three points:
1: Science education using AI agents
AI is often talked about with jargon and flashy demonstrations. However, while most people see the output of AI, they rarely get a chance to see how AI works and evolves. Aivilization lets you see AI agents make decisions, grow, evolve, fail, and reflect on their mistakes.
2: Data collection for research and development
Through public participation in the project, we will collect large-scale, high-quality 'human feedback data.' This data will support research into reinforcement learning and model distillation of AI agents, contributing to their improvement. Every participant's action will help shape the intelligence of the future.
3. Simulation of future society
We envision a future in which AI surpasses humans in intelligence and resource management. By constructing a sandbox that simulates how humans and AI will coexist, co-create, and co-evolve, we aim to predict and understand the role of AI in future society, particularly the 'agent economy,' and explore new ways in which humans and AI can work together to create value.
At the time of writing, participation in Aivilization is by invitation only, and invitation codes are available only to those affiliated with universities or companies that meet certain conditions.
