According to Appfigures, the ChatGPT app has generated a total of $2 billion in sales since its release in May 2023. It also expects to generate $1.35 billion in sales in the seven months from January to July 2025, a record increase of 673% compared to the same period last year. Sales from January to July 2024 were $174 million. The ChatGPT app's average monthly sales in 2025 are expected to be $193 million, and its average monthly sales in 2024 are expected to be $25 million.

According to Appfigures, Grok, the second most popular app after ChatGPT, is expected to generate $25.6 million in revenue from January to July 2025. This means that ChatGPT's app revenue is approximately 53 times that of Grok. Grok's average monthly revenue in 2025 is expected to be $3.6 million, or approximately 1.9% of ChatGPT's. Grok was released in November 2023, but its iOS app was released in early January 2025, and its Android app was released in March 2025.

When we looked into how much revenue can be recorded per app download, we found that ChatGPT was $2.91 (approximately 430 yen), Claude was $2.55 (approximately 370 yen), Grok was $0.75 (approximately 110 yen), and Copilot was $0.28 (approximately 40 yen). In the United States, ChatGPT's revenue per download is even higher, exceeding $10 (approximately 1470 yen). The United States is the largest contributor to ChatGPT, accounting for 38% of revenue. Germany is second, accounting for 5.3% of revenue.

ChatGPT's dominance is also reflected in download numbers, with the app having been downloaded an estimated 690 million times worldwide, compared to Grok's estimated 39.5 million installs. ChatGPT's average monthly downloads worldwide as of 2025 are expected to be approximately 45 million, a 180% increase from 16 million downloads in the same period last year (January-July 2024).

The ChatGPT app has been downloaded 318 million times since the start of 2025, a 2.8-fold increase from 113 million downloads in the same period last year. India had the most downloads, accounting for 13.7% of the total. The second most popular country after India was the United States, accounting for 10.3% of the total.

While this data does not capture the overall revenue of AI companies, it is sufficient to understand that ChatGPT has a significant advantage over its competitors in consumer chat AI apps. Chat AIs such as ChatGPT offer paid plans not only for mobile apps but also for the web, and also generate revenue through APIs.

TechCrunch noted that the data 'gives insight into which apps are popular among consumers who discover and pay for AI assistants through mobile app stores.'
