PS5 sales reached 2.5 million units between April and June 2025, with Sony's overall sales reaching a record high of 2.6216 trillion yen

Sony announced its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2025 (April to June) on Thursday, August 7, 2025. During the earnings announcement, it was reported that PlayStation 5 (PS5) sales increased compared to the same period last year, and that the impact of Trump tariffs was reduced from the previous quarter's forecast.

Sony's sales for the first quarter of fiscal year 2025 increased 2% year-on-year to 2.6216 trillion yen, and operating profit increased 36% year-on-year to 340 billion yen. Both sales and operating profit were record first-quarter results.

The results by segment are as follows. Growth was particularly strong in Game & Network Services (G&NS), with G&NS sales increasing 8% year-on-year to 936.5 billion yen and operating profit increasing approximately 2.3 times year-on-year to 148 billion yen.

In the first quarter of 2025, PS5 sales totaled 2.5 million units, an increase of 100,000 units compared to the same period last year. Total PS5 and PS4 game software sales totaled 65.9 million units, of which 6.9 million were Sony first-party titles. The digital download sales rate was 83%.

PSN's monthly active users increased 6% year-over-year to 123 million.

Total gaming time also increased by 6% compared to the same period last year.
Compared to the first quarter of 2018, when PS4 was the mainstream hardware, the number of monthly active users increased by 32%, and sales of content and services increased by approximately 50%.

In the first quarter of 2025, first-party titles such as 'MLB The Show,' 'Destiny 2,' and 'Helldivers 2' accounted for just over 40% of live service game sales.

Among major single-player titles, 'DEATH STRANDING 2,' released in June 2025, has been highly praised, and 'Ghost of Yōtei' is scheduled for release in October 2025.

Regarding the impact of Trump's tariffs, as of May 2025, it was estimated that 'the impact on the full-year financial results for 2025 will be negative 100 billion yen,' but as of August 2025, the estimated impact amount has been relaxed to 'negative 70 billion yen.'
