Vine is a short video posting and sharing service that first appeared in 2012. Before it could launch as a startup, it was acquired by Twitter. However, around 2016, core staff members began to leave the company one after another, and the service was discontinued in January 2017.

The app was eventually replaced by 'Vine Camera,' which only featured short, looping videos. Videos shot on Vine and shared on the platform were archived and available for download, but by 2022, they were no longer available.
Elon Musk, who acquired Twitter in 2022, conducted a survey of users about the revival of Vine. Nearly 70% of respondents said they wanted it to be resurrected. However, even after this survey, Vine never made a comeback.

When Grok's video-generating feature 'Imagine' was installed in August 2025, Musk posted, 'Grok Imagine is an AI Vine.' He added, 'We recently discovered an archive of Vine videos that were thought to have been deleted, and we're working to make them accessible to users. If you'd like, you can still post.'
It's interesting to see the archives being restored, but there's also the possibility that content that was 'fortunately gone' may be restored, so it's hard to say what the best outcome will be.
