On August 4, 2025, local time, Spotify announced a price increase for its Premium plan. Spotify explained the reason for the price increase, saying, 'We're committed to providing a world-class, personalized experience for all our users. We continually innovate our products and features, and adjust our prices from time to time to provide the best experience for our users.'

The price increase for the Premium plan will be implemented in multiple markets in South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific over the next month, and Spotify will send emails to Premium plan users explaining how the change will affect them.

Below is an example of a price increase explanation email. The country and region are unknown, but the price of the Premium plan has been increased from 10.99 euros (about 1,870 yen) per month to 11.99 euros (about 2,040 yen).

Spotify has not disclosed the specific countries where the price increase will take effect, but The Verge, a technology media outlet, used the Internet Archive to check the prices of Premium plans in various European countries, and found that Spain, Italy, and Portugal have already seen a 1 euro (approximately 170 yen) increase. It also appears that there will be no further price increases in countries that have already seen price increases in the past few months, such as France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.

Spotify reported its quarterly earnings on July 29, 2025, and while the company's paid subscriber numbers (Premium plan subscribers) grew strongly, its profit outlook fell short of analyst expectations, causing its stock price to fall 11.5% and its market capitalization to drop by $16 billion (approximately 2.35 trillion yen). However, Reuters reports that Spotify's stock price rose 8% following the announcement of the Premium plan price increase.

During the company's earnings call, when asked why Spotify doesn't raise prices more frequently, CEO Daniel Ek explained that the company prioritizes long-term membership retention over short-term revenue growth.

Ek also explained that the ruling banning Apple from 'imposing fees on out-of-app purchases' has led to 'very positive growth in paid subscribers (in the US).'
