I tried 'Imabari Yakibuta Tamagohan' (Imabari Grilled Pork and Egg Rice), a local gourmet dish from Imabari that Matsuya is selling nationwide.

Imabari Yakibuta Tamagohan , a popular local dish and soul food of Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, has been available at Matsuya stores nationwide (with some exceptions) since Tuesday, July 29, 2025. Originally, it was sold for a limited time at select stores to commemorate the opening of the Matsuya Matsunoya Imabari Katayama store in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, in April 2025, but this time, as it is making its nationwide debut, I went to try it.

We arrived at Matsuya.

There was a poster advertising 'Imabari Yakibuta Tamago-han' in front of the store.

I immediately ordered the 'Imabari Yakibuta Tamagohan' (Grilled Pork and Egg Rice) and its derivative 'Imabari 'Karatama' Yakibuta Tamagohan (Grilled Pork and Egg Rice).' The dish was ready in about three minutes after ordering. On the left is the 'Yakibuta Tamagohan' (Grilled Pork and Egg Rice) and on the right is the 'Karatama' (Spicy Egg).

First, I'll try the normal 'Imabari Yakibuta Tamagomeshi'.

The fried eggs made with two eggs are freshly cooked, with soft-boiled yolks that jiggle.

Under the fried egg, roast pork is laid out to cover the rice.

The roast pork has a firm texture and a slightly sweet, slightly salty soy sauce flavor. This alone may seem a bit too much to eat with rice, but the soft-boiled yolk brings the overall flavor together nicely, making it easy to keep your chopsticks moving.

On the other hand, the Imabari 'Spicy Egg' Roasted Pork and Egg Rice looks almost identical to the regular version, making it difficult to tell the difference.

When I tried it, I felt that there was a bit of a spicy kick at first, but the editorial staff, who are relatively good at spicy food, honestly got used to it quickly, and I couldn't really tell the difference in taste from normal. I think the sauce on the fried egg is a spicy sauce, but there are two egg yolks that make the spiciness milder, so it seems like the power has been significantly reduced.

'Imabari Roast Pork Rice' is 880 yen including tax, and 'Imabari Spicy Roast Pork Rice' is 980 yen including tax.
