The following is a statement posted by President Trump on Truth Social at 8:12 a.m. on July 23, 2025: 'The reciprocal tariffs that Japan will pay to the United States will be 15%,' 'Japan will invest $550 billion (approximately 80.6 trillion yen) in the United States, and the United States will receive 90% of the profits,' and 'Most importantly, Japan will open up to trade, including automobiles, trucks, rice, and other agricultural products.'

Furthermore, a Japanese government official told NHK that the automobile tariff has been raised to 15%. The proportion of rice imported from the United States will effectively increase. Meanwhile, the 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum will remain in place.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba entered the Prime Minister's Office just after 9:00 a.m. on July 23, 2025. At that time, he commented to reporters, 'I have received a report from Minister Akazawa, who is in charge of economic revitalization. I was in touch with President Trump, Treasury Secretary Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Rutnick before the meeting, and I have given the necessary instructions. There is no discrepancy in policy between Minister Akazawa and me. If necessary, I will hold a telephone or face-to-face meeting with President Trump. I will be informed of the content in the future, so I will examine it carefully. We have been negotiating to the limit with all our might, with our national interests at stake, regarding automobiles and other products. As a government, I believe that this will protect our national interests, and that Japan and the United States will work together to create jobs, make good products, and play various roles in the world.'

At the time of writing, no official announcement had been made by the White House or the Japanese government.

In addition, Minister of Economic Revitalization Akazawa updated X (formerly Twitter) at 8:55 a.m. on July 23, 2025, reporting the completion of the negotiating mission.
