The 'Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program' is a service test for users who subscribe to the 'Nintendo Switch Online + Add-on Pack.' Users can participate in the test on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The details are only stated as 'a test on Nintendo Switch Online services' and 'a test of the same service as that conducted in October 2024,' but participants will 'download dedicated software and play games.'
The Verge, a technology media outlet that reported on the Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program, reported that 'Nintendo conducted the same test in October 2024, but asked participants not to reveal details of the playtest, but leaks suggested that it was a test for some kind of MMO (massively multiplayer online) style game.'
The playtest will run for 14 days from 10:00 on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 to 9:59 on Monday, August 11, 2025, Japan time. Eligibility requirements are that you have subscribed to the 'Nintendo Switch Online + Additional Pack' as of 7:00 on Friday, July 18, 2025, Japan time, that your Nintendo account is 18 years of age or older, and that your Nintendo account is registered in one of the following countries: Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Canada, Brazil, or Mexico.
Also, eligible applicants can apply in groups. When applying as a group, up to four people can apply. It is prohibited to disclose the test contents to third parties, and if you participate in a group, you can only exchange information within the group. If there are a large number of applicants for the 'Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program,' participants will be selected by lottery. The number of participants is expected to be around 40,000. According to The Verge, the number of participants in the playtest as of October 2024 was 10,000.
