Linux desktop market share finally reaches 5%, surpassing 5% in multiple US metrics

When Windows is updated, there is a lot of talk about 'installing Linux on your old PC and using it!', but Windows still has an overwhelming share of the market. Meanwhile, it has become clear that the share of Linux desktops in the United States has exceeded 5% by multiple indicators.

Below is a graph of desktop OS share in the United States compiled by Statcounter , a web traffic analysis service. The Linux desktop share (red line) gradually increased, reaching 5.03% in June 2025.

The US government has

published an analysis of US government website traffic, which includes information on the operating systems used by users. Looking at the OS share in 2024, Linux was at 4.5%.

And in 2025, Linux is expected to grow to 5.8% of OS market share.

Cloudflare, a CDN provider with servers deployed around the world, also

publishes its traffic analysis results. Looking at the trend in desktop OS share in the United States over the past year, Linux's share was 2.7% as of July 1, 2024, but increased to 4.4% by July 1, 2025. Although it did not reach 5%, it is a significant increase.

By the way, if we look at the desktop OS market share in Japan as of July 1, 2025, Linux's share will be 1.4%.

However, the Linux desktop has the problem that Windows apps do not run on the bare-metal system, but you can install a compatibility layer such as Wine to make some apps work. In particular, Valve , the developer of Steam, has developed a compatibility layer called 'Proton,' which allows a significant number of Steam games to run on Linux. For some games, it is faster to play them on Linux than on Windows.
