The Department of Defense has signed contracts to provide four major tech companies with up to $200 million each to develop agent-based AI workflows to solve national security challenges, the Department of Defense's Chief Digital and AI Officer's Office (CDAO) announced.

'This will enable the Department of Defense to leverage the technology and talent of America's most advanced AI companies to improve our ability to understand and respond to critical national security needs,' the Pentagon said.

The Department of Defense already provides combatant commands, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff with access to the latest general-purpose generative AI models through the Army's Enterprise Large Language Model Workspace, an AI platform built in collaboration with the private sector called Advancing Analytics ( Advana ), the military AI project Maven Smart System , and Edge Data Mesh nodes.

'Through our technical expertise, the Claude Gov model, Claude for Enterprise, and leadership in safe and responsible AI, we look forward to deepening collaboration across the Department and helping solve important mission challenges,' said Thiyagu Ramasamy, head of public sector at Anthropic.

Claude Gov is Anthropic's AI model designed specifically for the US defense and intelligence community, and is tailored to the needs of government agencies, such as threat assessment and intelligence analysis.

These customers can use the Grok product family to accelerate the development of America. Specifically, it can be used in a wide range of areas, from speeding up and streamlining routine government services to using AI to solve unsolved problems in basic science and technology.'

'The adoption of AI will transform our ability to support our warfighters on the battlefield and maintain a strategic advantage over adversary forces,' said Doug Matti, CDAO's chief digital and AI officer. 'By leveraging commercially available solutions, we will accelerate the adoption of advanced AI in information, business and enterprise information systems.'
