The existence of MSL was reported in June 2025, and it was rumored that the company was planning to open an AI research institute headed by Wang.
Meta plans to build an AI lab led by Scale AI CEO Alexander Wang specializing in the pursuit of 'superintelligence,' and offers hundreds of millions to tens of billions of yen in compensation to lure AI researchers from OpenAI and Google - GIGAZINE

In an internal memo to employees, CEO Zuckerberg said, 'As AI advances accelerate, the development of superintelligence is on the horizon. We believe this will be the dawn of a new era for humanity, and Meta will do whatever it takes to be its leader.' He also announced the creation of Meta Superintelligence Labs, a new research division dedicated to developing next-generation models.
Additionally, in an internal memo, Zuckerberg said Meta's AI development would be handled under MSL and would be led by Wang as 'chief AI officer.'

Zuckerberg also revealed that Friedman will co-lead a group with Wang to oversee Meta's AI products and applied research.
According to an internal memo, other prominent members of the MSL include Trapit Bansal, a pioneer of reinforcement learning in thought chains and co-developer of OpenAI's o series; Shuchao Bi, co-developer of GPT-4o's voice mode and o4-mini; Huiwen Zhang, co-developer of GPT-4o's image generation mode; Ji Lin, co-developer of GPT-4o and o4-mini; Joel Pober, former Meta developer and Antropic inference specialist; Jack Lai, Gemini 2.5 inference specialist; and Johan Schalkvik, former Google Fellow and Maya technical lead.
In order to strengthen its AI-related business, Meta made a huge investment of $10 billion (approximately 1.45 trillion yen) in Scale AI, led by Wang, in June 2025, and actively recruited talent, including negotiating acquisitions with various other companies. These attempts have culminated in the establishment of a department called MSL.

MSL is currently developing Llama 4.1 and Llama 4.2, and Zuckerberg has declared that the company will begin research into the next generation of models in parallel, aiming to achieve cutting-edge technology within the next year or so.
Zuckerberg said, 'Meta is uniquely positioned to bring superintelligence to the world. We have a strong business foundation that can build much more computing power than a small lab. And we have extensive experience in developing and growing products that reach billions of people. We are pioneers and leaders in the rapidly growing field of AI glasses and wearable devices. Moreover, our corporate structure allows us to move forward with much greater confidence and boldness. With this influx of new talent and a parallel approach to model development, I am optimistic that we can realize the dream of personal superintelligence for everyone.'
