Google transfers AI-to-AI protocol 'A2A' to Linux Foundation, aiming for community-driven development to avoid reliance on a single company

The Linux Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium, has announced that it will manage the development project of 'Agent2Agent (A2A),' a protocol developed by Google for interoperability between AI agents. Google said the reason for the transfer of the project is 'to continue development in a vendor-independent, community-driven manner.'

'By launching the A2A Protocol Project under the neutral governance of the Linux Foundation, we ensure that this critical component remains vendor-neutral and community-driven. This effort is intended to accelerate the adoption and development of the A2A Protocol by providing a robust framework for open collaboration, intellectual property management, and long-term stewardship,' Google said in a blog post.

According to the Linux Foundation, the A2A Protocol project is backed not only by Google, but also by more than 100 other major technology companies, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, Cisco, SalesForce, SAP and ServiceNow.

'We have transferred Google Cloud's A2A protocol project to the Linux Foundation to develop a vendor-neutral, community-driven communications standard,' said Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian. 'More than 100 companies already support A2A, including allthe hyperscalers .'

'We are excited to have this new home for the A2A Protocol Project,' said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. 'Joining the Linux Foundation will ensure A2A's long-term neutrality, alignment and governance while catalyzing the next generation of agent-to-agent productivity.'

'At AWS, we believe agent AI will be essential to nearly every customer experience,' said Swami Sivasubramanian, vice president of AI, AWS. 'We welcome A2A to the Linux Foundation and look forward to creating broader opportunities for everyone building AI-powered apps. We look forward to supporting the community through our contributions to the project and access to the broadest and deepest agent frameworks, protocols, and services.'

In addition, Ina Arenas, vice president of Azure AI Foundry products at Microsoft, said, 'Open standards are essential, but they are only part of the equation. Microsoft is committed to shaping the future of agent AI by combining open interoperability with the enterprise-grade capabilities that organizations need to deploy agents responsibly and at scale. We welcome A2A's announcement as a neutral, non-profit project and look forward to working together as we lead the next chapter in open standards for agent development.'
