According to Bloomberg, the layoffs will mainly affect sales staff and will take place after the end of the company's fiscal year in June 2025. According to a person familiar with the matter, the number of employees has not yet been determined, and the layoffs may affect departments other than sales.
The job cuts follow a 3% cut in workforce in May 2025. At the time, Microsoft had a total workforce of about 228,000, so the layoffs were reported to be around 6,000. At the time, product development and engineering were hit the hardest, while customer-facing departments such as sales and marketing were relatively unaffected.

As of the end of its fiscal year in June 2024, Microsoft had approximately 228,000 employees, of which approximately 45,000 worked in sales and marketing, its third-largest division after operations (86,000 people) and product research and development (81,000 people).
Microsoft has not issued a statement on the matter, which is expected to involve job cuts, mainly in sales.

Microsoft has previously said it regularly reviews its organizational structure to ensure it's investing in growth. The company spends heavily on servers and data centers, and executives have promised shareholders and warned employees to curb spending in other areas. The company also released a research report that suggests small, AI-assisted teams are the future in many industries, which could prompt the company to ramp up its own AI efforts.
