On June 12, US President Donald Trump stated, 'I don't want to say it's imminent, but it's entirely possible,' and it was reported that Israel was likely to take military action within the next few days.
Then, on June 13, Israeli forces reportedly launched airstrikes on Iran, with Israeli military officials saying the attacks were aimed at Iran's nuclear program and long-range missile capabilities.
Middle Eastern media Al Jazeera reported that several explosions were heard in Tehran, the capital of Iran, at around 3:00 a.m. local time on June 13, and smoke was seen near a residential area where military personnel live. According to Iranian state media, many civilians, including women and children, were killed in homes in Tehran.
Military officials said at a news conference that the 'preemptive, precise and coordinated strikes' had hit dozens of targets in Iran, and an Israeli security source said the initial attack targeted Iran's top military leader and senior nuclear scientist.
In Israel, a state of emergency was declared in preparation for retaliation from Iran, and schools, gatherings and non-essential work were banned. CNN Jerusalem bureau chief Oren Lieberman said that sirens were sounded throughout Jerusalem when the state of emergency was declared, and alerts were sent to residents' smartphones.
'Israeli preemptive strikes against Iran can be expected to be followed in the near future by missile and drone attacks against Israel and its civilians,' Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a statement early on June 13.
'Israel has just launched military operation Rising Lion to roll back the Iranian threat to Israel's survival. This operation will continue for as many days as necessary to eliminate that threat. For the last decade, tyrants in Tehran have brazenly and openly called for the destruction of Israel,' Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a television address. 'We have struck at the heart of Iran's nuclear weapons program. We targeted Iran's main uranium enrichment facility at Natanz , as well as Iran's nuclear scientists working on developing a nuclear bomb. We have also struck the heart of Iran's ballistic missile program.'

With the US scheduled to hold nuclear talks with Iran on June 15 , President Trump had warned Israel ahead of the attack, saying, 'We're close to a deal. As long as I think there's a deal, I don't want you to go any further, because that could ruin it.'
CNN noted that Israel's decision to attack Iran despite prior warning has thrown President Trump into an early test in his presidency: 'This casts a shadow over the already strained relationship between President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu, with whom he has been at odds for months and who as recently as this week urged him not to attack,' the outlet reported.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, 'Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not engaged in attacks on Iran and our top priority is the protection of US forces in the region. Israel has informed us that it believes this action is necessary for its defense. President Trump and his administration are taking all necessary steps to protect US forces and will remain in close contact with our regional partners. Let me be clear: Iran should not target American colleagues or personnel.'
