The internet has become concerned by the rise of so-called 'nudification' apps that use AI to create fake non-consensual nude or sexually explicit images. Meta has had rules against non-consensual sexual imagery for many years, and over a year ago updated those policies to make it clear that we do not permit the promotion of any nudification apps or similar services.

When Meta becomes aware of the promotion of nudity apps or similar services, it removes the relevant ads, Facebook pages, and Instagram accounts, blocks links to websites promoting these services from being accessible from the Meta platform, and restricts search terms such as 'nudity,' 'undressing,' and 'clothing removal' from appearing in search results on Facebook and Instagram.

However, on June 6, 2025, CBS News reported that it had found hundreds of ads for 'nudity apps' on the Meta platform. According to the CBS News report, the ads for the nudity apps were primarily targeted at men aged 18 to 65 living in the United States, the United Kingdom, and European Union (EU) member states.

Below is an example of a nude-enhancing app that was openly advertised on the Meta platform.

Following this report, Meta announced that it would sue Joy Timeline, which operates CrushAI, one of the 'nudity apps.' CrushAI is an app that uses AI to generate nude or sexually explicit images without the individual's consent. Meta plans to sue Joy Timeline in Hong Kong, where the company is based, and has already blocked CrushAI's ads on its platform.

According to Meta, Joy Timeline was attempting to circumvent Meta's ad review process and continue to run ads after they were repeatedly removed for violating Meta's rules.

Regarding its legal action against Joy Timeline, Meta said, 'This lawsuit demonstrates how seriously we take abuses by nudification apps and our commitment to doing all we can to protect our community from such abuses. Meta will continue to take necessary action, including legal action, against those who abuse our platform in this way.'

When Meta removes ads, accounts, or content that promotes nudity apps like CrushAI, we share information about them, including URLs to violating apps and websites, with other technology companies through

the Tech Coalition's Lantern program to help other organizations investigate and take action.

Meta began sharing this information at the end of March 2025 and has shared more than 3,800 URLs so far. Meta reported that it 'shares warnings about child safety violations, including sextortion , with other companies, and this is an important continuation of that effort.'

In addition, to remove 'apps like CrushAI that violate Meta's Terms of Use' from its platform, Meta is developing new technology specifically designed to identify these types of ads, even if they don't contain nudity, and is using matching technology to more quickly find and remove counterfeit ads.

Meta is also applying the tactics it uses to disrupt organized networks of fraudulent activity to identify and remove account networks operating these ads. Since the beginning of 2025, Meta's dedicated team has conducted thorough investigations and identified and removed four account networks that were attempting to run ads promoting these services.

In addition, 404 Media reported in April 2024 that advertisements for the nudity app were being posted on Instagram. In response to this report, Apple and Google removed the app from their app stores.
