A closer look at the appearance of Fujifilm's film camera-style digital camera 'X half,' a unique camera equipped with a vertical monitor and optical viewfinder

Fujifilm will release the digital camera ' X half (product name: FUJIFILM X-HF1) ' in late June, which reproduces the appearance and operation of a film camera. X half is a half-size camera-style digital camera based on a 3:4 vertical composition, and also has a 'film camera mode' that allows you to experience the shooting flow of a film camera, which is to 'shoot until the film is used up and develop it.' Since such an unusual camera arrived at the GIGAZINE editorial department, we first took a closer look at the appearance.

The outer box of X half looks like this.

In addition to the X half main unit, the box contained a battery, a strap, a headphone adapter, and parts used to attach the strap.

The X half looks like this. The body comes in three colors: Silver, Charcoal Silver, and Black. I borrowed the Black one this time.

Its dimensions are 105.8mm wide x 64.3mm high x 45.8mm deep, making it easy to fit in the palm of your hand.

The lens cap is made of rubber and snaps into place with no tabs or other fastenings.
The lens is integrated and cannot be replaced. The focal length is about 32mm (35mm equivalent), the maximum aperture is F2.8. The sensor size is 13.3mm x 8.8mm (1 inch size), and the effective pixel count is about 17.74 million pixels.

The X half is a camera modeled after a half-size camera, and is designed for shooting in a 3:4 vertical composition.

Around the lens are the focus ring and aperture ring.

The aperture ring can be turned by pinching the lever.

It also has a flash and a viewfinder.

The back looks like this. It has a simple look with few buttons.

I turned on the power and lit up the LCD monitor. The central LCD monitor is 2.4 inches in size and has about 920,000 dots.

The LCD monitor supports touch operation, and you can adjust the shutter speed and ISO sensitivity by touching the bottom of the screen.

The sub LCD monitor on the left also supports touch operation, and you can switch

I recorded a video of switching between film simulations. The film simulations include those named after popular Fujifilm films such as 'PROVIA,' 'ACROS,' and 'REALA ACE,' so you can have fun choosing the right film.
The viewfinder is optical, not EVF. The field of view is about 90% and the viewfinder magnification is about 0.38x.

The left side is equipped with a flash switch and terminal cover.

The USB Type-C terminal is hidden under the terminal cover.

There are no buttons on the right side.

The battleship part looks like this. It's flat and simple.

The accessory shoe is a type that does not have electronic contacts.

When you turn the power lever to ON, the frame switching lever will pop out towards the front.

I recorded a video of the surrounding activity when I switched the power lever to ON. The frame switching lever can be used for '2in1 shooting' which allows you to combine two photos side by side, or as a substitute for the film winding lever in 'Film Camera Mode' which recreates the experience of shooting with a film camera.
The bottom is equipped with a tripod screw hole and a battery cover.

Inside the battery cover there are a battery slot and an SD card slot.

One battery,

The actual weight of the X half body and battery was 247g.

It looks like this when you hold it in your hand. There is no grip, but it is light enough to hold with one hand.

X half is scheduled to be released in late June 2025. The price is open, with the expected retail price being around 108,000 yen.
A detailed review article on the shooting functions of X half will be published at a later date.
