Walmart was the first company in the United States to introduce 'drone delivery of packages,' and in 2021 began drone delivery in Arkansas in collaboration with drone technology startup DroneUp.
This time, Walmart has announced that it will partner with Alphabet's Wing to expand the service to 100 stores. Customers can request drone delivery through the Wing app. Packages can be delivered up to six miles (about 9.6 km) from the store.
According to Greg Casey, senior vice president of Walmart, popular items delivered by drones include eggs, ice cream, pet food, bananas and lemons, and occasionally cold and fever medicines for emergencies.
At the peak of its partnership with DroneUp, the drone delivery service was available at 37 stores in Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Utah and Virginia. However, since the company ended its partnership with DroneUp and re-formed with Wing, the service area has not expanded; the service is currently only available in five states: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas.
