'Space Selfie' enables 'pseudo space selfie' by taking a selfie taken on a satellite with the Earth in the background

' Space Selfie ' has been released, which allows you to take selfies on a satellite display with the Earth floating in space in the background. Space Selfie is provided by Mark Rober , a former NASA engineer and YouTuber with over 68.4 million subscribers, and CrunchLabs , the engineering team he leads.

Here's how Space Selfie works.

Upload a selfie. Uploading photos is free.

The selfie you upload will be sent to SAT GUS , a satellite operated by CrunchLabs.

A selfie is displayed on the LCD screen (Google Pixel) on the SAT GUS, which is then captured by a separate camera.

The photos taken will be transmitted to Earth and shared with #SpaceSelfie .

To upload a selfie, go to the Space Selfie official website , enter your name and email address in the middle of the page, and click 'LET'S UPLOAD'. Please note that by uploading a selfie, you agree to receive marketing emails from CrunchLabs. However, you can unsubscribe from emails at any time.

Click “CONTINUE”.

Click the pencil icon in the center of the screen.

Select the selfie and click 'Open.'

Then, the following screen will appear, so use 'Zoom' to enlarge or reduce the photo, or use 'Straighten' to rotate the photo and cut it out to your preferred appearance. When you have completed the enlargement, reduction and rotation editing, click 'SAVE PHOTO'.

Next, choose where on Earth you want to take photos of SAT GUS while it is flying. If there is a specific location, select 'I have the perfect place!' If there is no specific location, select 'No preference.' This time, I chose 'No preference.'

Finally, click the checkbox and click 'SUBMIT MY DETAILS.' Note that you must be 13 years of age or older to upload images.

This completes the photo upload. All you have to do is wait for the photos you took to arrive from Space Selfie. Once the photos have been taken, they will be added to the URL displayed at the bottom of the screen along with an email notification.

SAT GUS was launched on January 14, 2025 local time using SpaceX's

Falcon 9. The launch was live streamed on YouTube, and you can check out the footage below.

SAT GUS was designed and manufactured by Tyvak International of Milan, Italy, and a flight-proven camera from aerospace manufacturer Redwire will take the selfies projected onto the Google Pixel. The Redwire camera has a fixed aperture of f8, a fixed 3mm lens with radiation-resistant glass from SCHOTT , and is set to capture photos at a resolution of 4000 x 3000 pixels.

SAT GUS flies about 480 km above the Earth at a speed of 17,000 miles per hour (about 27,000 km) faster than a bullet, so it can orbit the Earth in about 90 minutes.

This is the size of SAT GUS. Pictured here is Mr. Loeber, the founder of Space Selfie.

The first distribution of photos taken by Space Selfie is scheduled for the summer of 2025, and notifications will be sent in advance by email.
