Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says US ban on AI chip exports 'a failure,' says spread of US chips vital to competitive advantage | Tom's Hardware

'Four years ago, NVIDIA had 95% market share in China. Now it's 50%. The rest is Chinese technology, and without NVIDIA there would be more local technology. Chinese AI researchers will use their own chips. They'll use the next best thing. Local companies are very aggressive. Export restrictions have motivated them, and with government support they're accelerating development. Our competition in China is very fierce,' Huang said.

In a recent example, NVIDIA recorded a $5.5 billion (approximately 787 billion yen) bill for the AI chip 'H20' sold to China, which required a license due to the US government tightening export controls. The H20 is a downgraded version of the AI chip 'H100' intended for sale in China.

But in China, where an alternative to the H20 was needed, Huawei has indicated it will ship the Ascend 910C, which it claims is comparable to the H100. This shows how NVIDIA's market share has been taken.

'If America wants to dominate, we need to accelerate the spread of AI chips to the fullest extent possible, not restrict them,' Huang said. According to Huang, President Trump understands that the policy was aimed at 'completely the wrong goal' and is working to revoke the regulations.
