Google Translate now available as default translation app on iOS

The Google Translate app for iPhone and iPad has been updated, allowing you to select Google Translate as the default translation app on each device.

In iOS 18.4 and later and iPadOS 18.4 and later, you can now set Google Translate as the default translation app. You can change the default translation app to Google Translate by opening the Settings app, tapping 'Apps' → 'Google Translate' → 'Default translation app' → 'Google Translate'.
This change is in response to EU regulations. Apple had limited the default apps for frequently used apps such as browsers, translations, and media playback to its own apps, which was said to be hindering competition, and the EU had issued a corrective recommendation. In response, Apple has added a new browser selection screen and default app settings, and added an option to delete pre-installed apps.

The ability to set Google Translate as the default will completely change the situation where Apple's built-in translation app always opens when you try to translate. Translation apps other than Google may support default settings in the future.

Under EU law, Apple is required to open up core system functionality to third-party developers and give users more choice and control.
In the future, it may be possible to use Google's AI 'Gemini' on Apple products.
