Waymo has previously worked with Jaguar Land Rover, a subsidiary of India's Tata Motors, Fiat Chrysler (the predecessor of Stellantis NV), Daimler Trucks, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai of South Korea, and Geely of China. In many cases, automakers have built vehicles modified for testing or equipped Waymo's own vehicles with the features.

According to announcements from the two companies, the partnership will 'leverage Waymo's technology and Toyota's car-making expertise to jointly explore ways to improve autonomous driving technology for Toyota's future commercially available vehicles.'

The following are comments from the leaders of both companies upon the signing of the basic agreement:

Yuki Nakajima, Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Corporation:
Toyota aims to realize a society with zero traffic accidents and transform into a mobility company that provides freedom of movement to everyone. Waymo, which aims to realize a safer society through autonomous driving technology, shares a common aspiration and vision with Toyota, and we are confident that this collaboration will help to popularize Waymo and autonomous driving technology around the world and bring us one step closer to a society with zero accidents. Together, our two companies will continue to make steady progress toward the realization of a safe and secure mobility society.

Waymo Co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana:
Waymo's mission is to be the world's most trusted driver. To achieve this mission, we need global partners like Toyota who share our commitment to making roads safer and expanding transportation access for everyone. Through this strategic partnership, we look forward to introducing Toyota vehicles to our ride-hailing service and inspiring Toyota customers with Waymo's self-driving technology.

By the way, Toyota partnered with Tesla, an EV manufacturer that rivals Waymo in autonomous driving technology, in 2010, but ended the partnership in 2014. In June 2017, Toyota sold its Tesla shares.

What is the cultural clash that ended the relationship between Toyota and Tesla, who formed a shocking alliance?
