According to Director Hosoda, the project for this film began to be conceived around March 2022, just after Russia's invasion of Ukraine occurred while the COVID-19 pandemic was showing signs of calming down, and was inspired by his desire to create a film that would address the question of 'how should we live in a world that is not peaceful?'

The protagonist of this work is Princess Scarlett, whose father was killed and whose revenge failed. This work depicts Scarlett's journey after waking up in the 'Land of the Dead,' where if she does not get revenge on her nemesis and reach the 'Endless Place,' she will become 'Nothingness' and disappear from existence.

The teaser visual released shows Scarlett holding a sword, with the tagline 'Should we live?'

For Director Hosoda, this is the fifth full-length animated film to be produced by Studio Chizu, which he founded in 2011. Since 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' was released in 2006, Director Hosoda has worked on films set in modern-day Japan or a world close to it, but this film takes a completely different direction from his previous works.
