What does Matsuya's 'Cheeseburger Bowl,' a bowl of rice with a bold cheeseburger twist, taste like?

Matsuya, a beef bowl chain, will be offering a ' Cheeseburger Bowl ' from Tuesday, April 22, 2025, which is a bowl of cheeseburgers, the king of hamburgers, with a 'bold Matsuya-style arrangement'. I was really curious about how the cheeseburger, which is made by sandwiching meat and cheese between bread, is arranged into a bowl using rice, so I actually tried it.

The famous 'cheeseburger' is now available in a rice bowl! 'Cheeseburger Rice Bowl' now available at Matsuya Foods

I arrived at Matsuya.

A banner in front of the store prominently advertised the arrival of the cheeseburger bowl.

I bought a meal ticket and ordered the 'Cheeseburger Bowl and Cola Set' (980 yen including tax), which came with a Coca-Cola.

The cheeseburger bowl and cola set arrived.

The cheeseburger bowl looks like a bowl of rice topped with shredded cabbage and a fried egg.

However, underneath the fried egg was a layer of melted cheese.

When I removed the fried egg, I found a large hamburger underneath.

The Coca-Cola included in the set was a 350ml can, and came with a medium mug filled with ice.

First, try eating the fried egg without cracking it. The hamburger is very juicy and elastic, and the crisp shredded cabbage is a nice accent. Cheese and Matsuya's special tomato sauce are added, giving it a very rich taste. Before eating it, I wondered, 'Is it like

loco moco ?', but the sauce on it is tomato sauce, not gravy sauce, so it has a very different taste. However, since it is eaten with rice instead of buns, it is not like reproducing the taste of a cheeseburger.

I heard that cracking the yolk of a fried egg brings out a mellow flavor, so I decided to give it a try.

The cheese and tomato sauce were quite rich, and when the juices from the hamburger steak were added, it was quite a punchy flavor, even with the white rice, but the addition of the egg yolk definitely made it smoother, and I felt it went particularly well with the hamburger steak. However, I was unsure of the necessity to call it a 'cheeseburger bowl,' and the question of whether it was just a cheese tomato hamburger steak set meal with a fried egg on top all in one bowl remained unanswered. Still, it was plenty filling and very satisfying.

In addition, the flavor of the tomato sauce and cheese is very strong, so it certainly goes well with cola, but since the base is rice and the taste is quite rich, depending on your preference, tea or water may be recommended.

The cheeseburger bowl will be available for a limited time at Matsuya stores nationwide from Tuesday, April 22, 2025. The regular size is 890 yen (tax included), and the large size is 980 yen (tax included).
