Meta is testing an AI tool that can detect if Instagram users are underage even if they lie about their age

Meta has begun testing an AI-based system to detect underage accounts on Instagram in the U.S. There are various restrictions placed on underage accounts, and some users are circumventing them, so Meta is stepping up its monitoring.

Meta's AI detection tool will detect if someone is suspected to be underage, even if their account age is set to adult, and will automatically set them to a teen account , with the option to change the setting if that's the case.
The press release did not reveal what exactly the system will detect and how, but according to information Bloomberg previously obtained from Alison Hartnett, Meta's director of product management for youth and social impact, the system will use AI to scrutinize users' profiles, follower lists, content they interact with, and posts from friends such as 'Happy Birthday' to classify users as 'over 18' or 'under 18.'

Teen accounts on Instagram have built-in protections and parental supervision, meaning they can't interact as freely as adult accounts. Those under 16 have even stronger protections, such as turning off 'blurring' in DMs and needing parental permission to go live. To get around these restrictions, some underage users intentionally register as adults.
According to Meta, there will be at least 54 million teen accounts worldwide by September 2024. Meta explains that the new feature to automatically set teen accounts is because 'parents are busy and may not have time to check their children's settings.'

Meta said, 'Understanding the age of online users is an industry-wide challenge.' In fact, Google has also strengthened its age verification and begun testing an AI tool to comprehensively determine age from the sites you visit and the videos you watch on YouTube.
