According to Counterpoint's market research report, Market Pulse Early Look , global smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2025 grew 3% year-on-year. 'The smartphone market was strong in the first quarter of 2025 due to improved economic conditions in emerging markets such as Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, as well as China's subsidy policy,' said Ankit Malhotra, senior research analyst at Counterpoint.
The market share of specific smartphone manufacturers is as follows. With the release of the iPhone 16e in the first quarter of 2025, Apple iPhone sales increased by 4% year-on-year. As a result, Apple has surpassed Samsung to boast the top share in the smartphone market.

In contrast, Samsung released the Galaxy S25 series in the first quarter of 2025, but sales fell 5% year-on-year, ceding its top share to Apple. However, Android Police, an overseas media outlet, said, 'The launch of the Galaxy S25 series was in mid-February 2025, delaying the start of the first quarter of 2025,' and 'Samsung's smartphone sales are on the rise toward the end of the first quarter,' pointing out that the sluggish sales growth is temporary.
The fastest-growing smartphone brand in the first quarter of 2025 was Vivo, which grew 6% year-on-year. China-based Vivo is partnering with German optical equipment manufacturer Carl Zeiss to sell the flagship Vivo X100 , and is expected to launch its next-generation model, the vivo X200 Ultra, in April 2025.
Outside the top five, Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo, HONOR, Huawei, and Motorola are growing rapidly and are engaged in fierce competition. Among them, Huawei has grown into China's largest smartphone manufacturer in Q1 2025.

On the other hand, the smartphone market could be hit hard by rising trade risks, supply chain instability, and growing economic uncertainty due to the introduction of ' reciprocal tariffs ' announced by US President Donald Trump on April 2, 2025. In response to this, Counterpoint analyzed, 'The spread of new technologies such as generative AI and foldable smartphones will continue, but manufacturers need to carefully monitor future demand. Although it is expected to remain strong in the long term, we expect smartphone sales to decline in 2025.'
