Developer Varun Mohan and others founded 'Codeium' in 2021 to develop AI coding tools. The company later changed its name to 'Windsurf'. According to overseas media TechCrunch, Windsurf's annual recurring revenue (ARR) is about $40 million (about 5.7 billion yen). In addition, it has raised a total of $243 million (about 34 billion yen) from venture capital firms such as Greenoaks Capital, General Catalyst, and Founders Fund, and it has been reported that the valuation reached $2.85 billion (about 400 billion yen) in February 2025.
It has been reported that OpenAI is offering to acquire Windsurf for around $3 billion, which, if completed, would be OpenAI's largest acquisition to date.
Although OpenAI and Windsurf have not disclosed any talks regarding the acquisition, OpenAI's Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil posted a video praising Windsurf on April 16, 2025.
