ChatGPT's memory function has been significantly improved, allowing you to view all past conversations

OpenAI announced on April 10, 2025 that it has significantly enhanced ChatGPT's memory capabilities. This enhancement will enable ChatGPT to remember information across the entire range of past conversations and tailor responses based on that information.

Until now, ChatGPT had a limited amount of information it could remember, and users had to explicitly tell it to remember what they wanted. With this update, however, ChatGPT can now use all past conversation history as context and tailor responses to the user's situation and preferences.

This update not only expands the amount of information that can be remembered, but also adds the 'Refer to chat history' feature. In addition to the previous 'Refer to saved memory', the 'Refer to chat history' option has been added. If you turn this option on, ChatGPT will be able to refer to all previous conversations when answering.

For example, if you turn on 'Refer to chat history' and type 'Please rate me based on our previous chats,' ChatGPT will summarize the instructions you've entered and then evaluate your character.

The chat history cannot be edited or viewed, but you can turn off the 'View chat history' feature in the settings. Also, the 'View chat history' feature is automatically disabled in 'Temporary chat' mode.

'ChatGPT can now access all conversation history to date,' said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. 'This is a big step toward making interactions with AI more personalized and providing a consistent experience for users.'

The update is being rolled out gradually to some users of the paid ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscription plans, except in the EU, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. There is no timetable for the update to be rolled out to free users.
