According to industry analysts, the iPhone's main manufacturing base is China, and Apple is heavily dependent on imports from China, but with President Trump imposing tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese products, iPhone prices in the US are bound to rise.
On the other hand, the tariffs imposed on Indian imports into the US are 26%, which is much lower than the tariffs imposed on China. President Trump has also declared a 90-day tariff suspension for any country that does not retaliate against the tariffs.
To avoid the Trump tariffs and increase iPhone inventory in the US, one of its largest markets, Apple is ramping up iPhone production in India and arranging charter cargo flights to import iPhones from India to the US, Reuters reported.

It has been reported that Apple has been sending out flights carrying iPhones and other products in anticipation of Trump's tariffs.

'Apple wanted to avoid tariffs,' a person familiar with the matter told Reuters, adding that Apple had lobbied India's airport authority to cut customs clearance times at Chennai airport in the southern state of Tamil Nadu from 30 hours to six hours.
According to sources, Chennai airport, which is located near Apple's manufacturing facility in India, has a customs-free lane that mimics the one Apple has in place at some airports in China.
According to sources and Indian government officials, six 100-ton cargo planes have departed from India since March 2025, including one that took off shortly after the Trump tariffs took effect in the second week of April 2025.
According to Reuters estimates, the package weight of an iPhone 14 and its charging cable is about 350g, so if six 100-ton cargo planes (600 tons) were carrying the iPhones, that would mean about 1.5 million iPhones were imported into the United States.

Apple sells more than 220 million iPhones a year worldwide. Research firm Counterpoint estimates that one-fifth of total iPhone imports into the US come from India, with the rest coming from China.
Apple and the Indian Ministry of Aviation did not respond to Reuters requests for comment.
