The organisation that runs the Royal Portuguese Library was founded in 1837 by a group of 43 Portuguese immigrants and political refugees. The current building, designed by Portuguese architect Rafael da Silva e Castro, was constructed between 1880 and 1887. The architecture, built in the Neo-Manueline style, which inherited the Manueline style that was popular in Portugal in the 16th century, is adorned with extremely intricate and ornate decorations, including a beautiful chandelier and skylight on the ceiling of the reading room.
