Roblox announced a project called 'Building an open source AI model for generating 3D objects and scenes in Roblox' in September 2024. This 'Cube 3D' is part of this project, and 3D objects are generated simply by entering simple text such as 'generate a golden helicopter' or 'generate a large unicorn'.

Below is a 3D object generated by entering 'a vintage green sofa with clean lines and velvet material' into Cube 3D. According to Roblox, the texture and color can be easily customized by simply changing the prompt, making the object design process faster and easier.

In addition, Cube 3D is open source, so developers can use the Cube 3D source code to tweak, develop plugins, and train for their own needs. Roblox says, 'Cube 3D makes the creation of 3D objects more efficient and enables developers to quickly explore new creative directions and increase productivity.'
According to Roblox, traditional 3D object generation techniques use image reconstruction approaches when 3D training data is lacking, but Roblox trains its models with native 3D data, so objects generated using Cube 3D are fully compatible with game engines and can be further expanded.
Cube 3D is trained using licensed and open source datasets, as well as data accumulated by the Roblox ecosystem. Roblox says, 'Cube 3D tokenizes 3D objects and understands their shapes as tokens. As a result, it can predict the next shape token and generate a complete 3D object, similar to how a language model can predict the next word in a sentence.'

Roblox has also announced AI tools to be used in conjunction with Cube 3D. The Mesh API allows you to create polygon meshes that define the shape of objects simply by entering text prompts into Cube 3D, while the Text Generation API allows you to implement AI features such as narration and voice commands within Roblox.
'In the future, Cube 3D will be able to generate entire scenes based on text, images, videos, and other types of multimodal input, and will be able to integrate with existing AI tools,' Roblox said.
