Social news site Digg to be bought by founder Kevin Rose and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian to revive

Digg, which was launched in 2004 and gained popularity as a social news site, was acquired by founder Kevin Rose and Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of the social news site Reddit. Although Reddit is a rival to Digg, the two teamed up to revive Digg with a new vision to 'revive the spirit of discovery and true community that made the early web fun and exciting.'

Digg is a social news site launched by Rose in 2024. The system in which users vote to change the ranking of links to websites and posted content was later adopted by Reddit, which appeared in 2005. It was a very popular service, and around 2008 Google considered acquiring it, but the deal did not go through.

In 2010, when Jay Adelson, CEO and founding member of the company, left the company, Rose became CEO and chairman. At the time, Digg was undergoing a major redesign of its backend and infrastructure, called 'v4,' but when it was introduced, Digg v4 had many problems and stalled. Matt Van Horn, who was in charge of the business, left the company, and Rose also left Digg.

With unique user numbers falling to 10% of their peak, Digg was sold in July 2012 in three parts. The brand name, website and technology were sold to venture studio

Betaworks for $500,000, the 15 staff members were sold to SocialCode, the Washington Post's social media advertising and analytics company, for $12 million, and the patent portfolio was sold to LinkedIn for about $4 million.

After Betaworks took over, Digg changed its style to one where content selected by the editorial team was displayed at the top, and the user-driven color retreated. In April 2018, it was acquired by ad tech company BuySellAds, but the same style was inherited. In addition, in 2022, it was acquired by marketing company Money Group.

The amount Rose and Ohanian paid for the acquisition was not disclosed, and Justin Metzel , a designer and longtime friend of Rose, was named CEO.

It is not yet clear when the new Digg will launch, but at the time of writing, it redirects to 'reboot.digg.com.'
