DOGE is implementing various measures under Elon Musk, and on February 23, 2025, it sent an email to government officials asking them to explain their recent work. If they did not respond to the email, they would be considered to have resigned.

In response to these efforts, 21 DOGE employees submitted a letter to Chief of Staff Susan Wiles stating, 'We joined the government on an oath to serve the American people, but it is clear that DOGE cannot keep that promise,' and announced their intention to resign.

According to sources, the people who left were veteran engineers, designers, data scientists and project managers who previously worked for the United States Digital Service (USDS), and many of them handled top-priority projects at DOGE.

The USDS was reorganized under President Donald Trump as DOGE, but the employees who submitted their resignations said they 'joined DOGE out of a sense of duty to public service.' In their resignations, the employees criticized, 'We will not use our skills as engineers to penetrate core government systems, jeopardize the confidential information of the American people, or dismantle critical public services. We will not lend our expertise to implement or justify DOGE actions.'

DOGE also fired about 40 DOGE employees in early February 2025 who were working to improve technology systems that support social security, veterans services, disaster assistance, and other government functions. The retiring employees said, 'Their dismissals put millions of Americans at risk. The sudden loss of their technical expertise will make critical systems and Americans' data less secure.' Jonathan Kamens, one of the roughly 40 people who were fired, said, 'USDS has spent more than a decade carefully implementing policies to enable the government to better serve its citizens. Musk doesn't care about that. All he cares about is seizing power and further expanding his fortunes.'

In response, Musk pointed out, 'These stories are purely fake news. The employee in question is a Democratic supporter and would have been fired soon even if he had not resigned.'
