Review: How long does the battery last on the ASUS Zenbook SORA (UX3407), a lightweight laptop weighing less than 900g?

A laptop is made up of many parts, but the battery is one of the most difficult parts to reduce in weight, and the only way to reduce the weight of the battery is to reduce the battery capacity. For this reason, some lightweight laptops have a small battery capacity and can only be operated for a short time. We were curious about the battery life of the ASUS lightweight laptop '

ASUS Zenbook SORA (UX3407) ' that arrived at the GIGAZINE editorial department, so we actually measured it.

The ASUS Zenbook SORA (UX3407) comes in two models: the lower-end UX3407QA equipped with the Snapdragon X X1-26-100 and the higher-end UX3407RA equipped with the Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100. Both models are lightweight, weighing less than 900g. The UX3407QA used this time weighed 884g. Details of the UX3407QA can be found in the following article.

The UX3407QA is equipped with a 70Wh battery. Let's verify how many hours it can actually be used on battery power. Before the verification, set the power mode to 'Balanced' from the settings. In addition, the automatic screen off and automatic sleep are turned off, and the energy saving function is also disabled.

We put the UX3407QA into battery power mode and continued playing

YouTube videos in full screen with only Microsoft Edge and the battery monitoring app ' PassMark BatteryMon ' running. After 763 minutes (12 hours and 43 minutes), the battery level dropped to 2% and the PC went into hibernation. The video was set to 4K quality, the screen brightness was set to maximum, the volume was set to 50, and the Internet was connected via Wi-Fi.

Next, to replicate the experience of working with a high-load application, we ran

the FINAL FANTASY XV WINDOWS EDITION benchmark in a loop until the battery ran out. After 266 minutes (4 hours and 26 minutes), the battery level dropped to 2% and the PC went into hibernation. The image quality of the FINAL FANTASY XV WINDOWS EDITION benchmark was set to light quality and the rendering resolution to 1280 x 720 pixels.

We graphed the progress of the remaining battery power under the conditions of 'Playing YouTube videos (low load)' and 'Running the FINAL FANTASY XV WINDOWS EDITION benchmark in a loop (high load)'. The remaining battery power decreases linearly, and we can see that the manufacturer's proprietary battery consumption reduction processing did not intervene along the way.

Next, we will measure the time it takes to fully charge the battery from 2%. The UX3407QA is charged from the USB Type-C port on the left side that supports USB Power Delivery. There are two USB Type-C ports, both of which support USB Power Delivery.

The maximum output of the included power adapter is 65W.

We charged the UX3407QA with only PassMark BatteryMon running, which records the remaining battery level, and measured the time it took for the battery to go from 2% to fully charged.

The measurement results are as follows: It was able to charge to 52% in 30 minutes from the start of charging, and reached 86% in 60 minutes. The charging speed slowed down when the battery level was around 90%, and it was finally able to charge to 100% after 113 minutes.

The UX3407QA is a lightweight PC weighing just 884g, but it can run on battery power for over four hours even under heavy load, and it can be charged in a short time. Therefore, you can use it without any worries about the battery life.

The processing performance and app operation status of the UX3407QA are summarized in detail in the following article.
