'Hot Tub' is an app distributed not through Apple's official app store, the App Store, but through AltStore PAL, an alternative app store.

The history of AltStore dates back to 2020, when Apple had not yet recognized alternative app stores. At the time, you basically had to jailbreak your iPhone to install unofficial apps, but AltStore emerged as an 'app store' app that allowed you to install unofficial apps without jailbreaking.

AltStore was an unofficial app store for a long time, but due to the DMA that came into effect in 2024, Apple must also recognize third-party app stores, so in April 2024, it was reborn as a third-party alternative app store called 'AltStore PAL.'

Although Apple does not allow pornographic apps to be distributed on the App Store, the DMA stipulates that 'pornographic apps must be made available through third-party platforms,' so there is nothing Apple can do to stop 'Hot Tub' from being published on AltStore PAL.

Apps published in alternative app stores must go through a notarization process by Apple to check for security and privacy risks, which is why Hot Tub claims to be 'the world's first Apple-approved porn app.'



On the other hand, Apple has issued the following statement, clarifying that it has not endorsed the product.

'We are deeply concerned about the safety risks that this type of hardcore pornography app poses to EU users, especially children. This app and others like it undermine consumer trust and confidence in the ecosystem that Apple has worked to make the best in the world for over a decade. Contrary to false statements made by marketplace developers (AltStore PAL), we have not approved this app and would never offer it on the App Store. In reality, Apple is being asked by the European Commission to allow apps to be distributed by marketplace operators like AltStore and Epic, who do not share our concerns about user safety.'

By the way, 'Hot Tub' will not be displayed on AltStore PAL by default, and users must explicitly select 'Show Hot Tub'. AltStore PAL will donate revenue earned from the patron platform Patreon to sex worker support organizations and the LGBTQ+ community.
