Previous research has shown that CBD is effective in treating epilepsy, psychosis, social anxiety disorder, skin inflammation, etc. In addition, since there is no evidence of abuse, dependence, or psychotropic effects, the use of CBD-related products is legal in Japan as long as the content of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) does not exceed the regulated limit.
As a result, CBD is becoming increasingly popular as a recreational drug and for medical purposes. According to a survey by market analysis firm Vantage Market Research, the global CBD market is estimated to be approximately $5 billion (approximately 770 billion yen) as of 2023, and is predicted to grow to more than $47 billion (approximately 7.29 trillion yen) by 2028.
A research team led by Rodrigo Neto, a molecular biologist at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, reported that CBD was discovered in the plant Trema micranthum, which grows wild in many South American countries. According to the science media ScienceAlert, Trema micranthum is basically considered a weed.

Furthermore, the research team conducted a chemical analysis of the CBD contained in Trema micranthum and found that it does not contain THC. Therefore, it does not face legal and regulatory hurdles for cannabis in each country. 'Trema micranthum is a plant that grows throughout Brazil, so Trema micranthum will be a simpler and cheaper source of CBD,' said Neto.
The research team plans to identify the best way to extract CBD from Trema micranthum. In addition, they will conduct a study to confirm the effectiveness of CBD extracted from Trema micranthum in patients receiving medical cannabis treatment. 'In recent years, CBD-containing formulations, such as Epidiolex , which is used to treat seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome , Dravet syndrome , and tuberous sclerosis , have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), so there has been new impetus for research on this topic,' said Neto. 'CBD is a legal alternative to using cannabis.'
