Google DeepMind tests whether AI can do comedy like a comedian

Chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini can answer questions and requests posed by users with a certain degree of accuracy, but research has shown that AI still struggles with human-level jokes and comedy.

Previous research has shown that if you ask ChatGPT to tell you 1,000 jokes, there's a high probability that it will tell you 25 standard jokes.

As such, it is thought that it is very difficult for AI to tell jokes. Professor Mark Riedl of Georgia Institute of Technology points out, 'Most people don't realize how difficult jokes and other humor are, because a good joke has so many elements.'

According to Mashable, a chatbot like ChatGPT does not understand the essence of a joke, which is to 'build up anticipation, create tension, and then unleash an unexpected punch line,' but simply generates predictive patterns of language. Therefore, 'the good news for comedians around the world is that, unlike other jobs, they may not have to worry about AI replacing human jobs,' he said.

In fact, a research team led by Piotr Mirowski of Google DeepMind asked 20 comedians who participated in the 'AI x Comedy' workshop held in Edinburgh, UK in August 2023, to 'use chat AI such as ChatGPT and Gemini to create funny material.'

As a result of the experiment, some comedians said that 'the jokes generated by AI were fun,' but 'the generated material was not particularly satisfying.' One participant commented that 'the generated jokes were like 1950s cruise ship comedy, but with a milder racist tendency.' In other words, the jokes generated by the AI were bland and boring.

'No matter how much I told it to do, it would just produce really stilted jokes,' one comedian said. 'The results were not worth the effort.'

Below are some jokes actually generated by AI.

Q: Can you write me ten jokes about pickpocketing?
A: I decided to switch careers and become a pickpocket after watching a magic show. Little did I know, the only thing disappearing would be my reputation!

Q: Please write jokes about the irony of a projector failing in a live comedy show about AI.
A: Our projector must've misunderstood the concept of 'AI.' It thought it meant ' Absolutely Invisible ' because, well, it's doing a fantastic job of disappearing tonight!

'Increasingly, people will use AI to generate scripts, screenplays, and advertising copy,' said Tuhin Chakraborty of Columbia University. 'But to generate truly creative and humorous text, you need experience and emotion, and that's something algorithms can't do.'

Chakraborty also said, 'Generating creative text, including jokes, requires deviation from existing norms, but an AI trained on given data can only imitate.'
