users moving from Twitter to other SNS . Meanwhile, it has been reported that Meta is developing a decentralized SNS codenamed ' P92 ' to replace Twitter. In response to this report, Meta has acknowledged that it is considering a decentralized SNS.

The news that Meta was considering a Twitter competitor called P92 was first reported by business media Moneycontrol, which reported that 'Meta is considering a Twitter competitor codenamed 'P29' that would be interoperable with Mastodon.'

According to the report, P92 will be a standalone text-based content app that will support ActivityPub , the decentralized social networking protocol that powers Mastodon, an emerging Twitter rival, and other federated apps.

According to a person familiar with the matter, P92 will be branded as Instagram and users will be able to log into the app using their Instagram credentials. Moneycontrol said it had obtained internal documents detailing P92's features, but provided few details.

Moneycontrol reported, 'It is not clear whether the app, P92, is still in the idea stage or whether development of the app has already begun. Sources close to the development say it is still a work in progress.'

Following the news, a Meta spokesperson provided Moneycontrol with a statement saying, 'We are exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there is still an opportunity for an alternative platform where creators and public figures can share timely updates related to their interests.'

More details about P92 were released by the source, who said, 'Right now,

the minimum viable product will definitely allow users to broadcast posts to people on other servers. They may also be able to follow people on other servers and view their content.'

Moneycontrol also noted that features such as tappable links for posts with previews like Twitter, user bios, usernames, verification badges, images, and videos will be available in the initial version of the app. It is also possible that elements such as followers and likes will be available. It is unclear whether features such as comments and messaging will be implemented in the initial version, but Moneycontrol reports that 'they are definitely features that will be implemented at some stage.'

The P92 will be provided under Meta's existing privacy policy, but the product description states that it will include language requiring data sharing between apps, as well as supplemental app-specific privacy policies and terms of use.

According to internal documents obtained by Moneycontrol, P92 users will be notified of and asked to agree to P92's specific terms of use and privacy policy when they sign up. Furthermore, after signing up, data sharing between Instagram and P92 will be 'minimal, but not zero.'

Following this, Platformer, which gained fame by reporting various leaks when Elon Musk acquired Twitter, also reported exclusively that it had received information from an anonymous Meta employee that 'Meta is considering building a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates.'

According to a source who spoke to Platformer, the product is still in its early stages and has no set timeline for release, but Instagram's legal and regulatory teams have already begun investigating potential privacy issues with the app and are working to address them before it's released. Additionally, Instagram's head of development, Adam Mosseri, is said to be leading the development of P92.

Platformer said, 'The most notable thing about P92 is that Meta plans to decentralize the network. Meta has made a statement in response to reports about P92, but has avoided making any clear statement about it being a decentralized network. However, in a decentralized network, individual users would typically be able to set up their own servers and set server-specific rules for content moderation.' In addition, it was reported that 'the fact that Meta, known for building the most profitable walled garden in the history of the industry, is considering such a product is unprecedented.'

Implementing basic functions such as following users on a decentralized network is much more complicated than on a regular SNS. In fact, on the decentralized network Mastodon, when you try to follow someone, you may be asked to log in to a separate server, and users who are faced with such troublesome interactions often leave the platform.

Platformer also points out that at the time of writing, there are no profitable decentralized networks. In addition, there is also the problem that it is not clear at the time of writing what a successful business model for a decentralized network would be.

Meta has built or prototyped dozens of social products, but almost none of them have been released into production. Therefore, it is unclear at the time of writing whether the P92 will be released as a product.

In December 2022, Meta-owned Instagram announced a feature called 'Notes' that allows users to post short sentences of up to 60 characters using only text and emojis. When the feature was announced, The New York Times reported that 'Meta was considering making Notes a competitor to Twitter.'
